The "Starter Position" Strategy Most Traders Get Wrong

Ever notice how some candles just look... different? Here's Why...

You know that voice in your head questioning if this is the "perfect" entry point?

I was just watching this play out during a recent trading session...

The setup looked promising, but instead of going all-in, I took what I call a "starter position" - and it completely changed the game's dynamics.

Here's why this matters to you...

Most traders approach position entry like an on/off switch.

They're either all-in or all-out…

But here's what I've learned after years of profitable trading: The best entries often come in layers.

Because when you take a starter position, you're giving yourself room to be wrong while still maintaining the opportunity to be right.

It's like dipping your toe in the water before diving in.

During our recent session, I started with a third of my planned position size.

This wasn't random - it was a calculated decision that gave me three distinct advantages:

  1. Mental clarity (less emotional attachment to the outcome)

  2. Room to average in at better prices

  3. Flexibility to adapt as the trade develops

But here's the crucial part most traders miss...

A starter position isn't just about sizing - it's about strategy.

You need clear rules for:

  • When to add to your position

  • How much to add each time

  • What confirms your thesis

  • What invalidates it

I used to make the mistake of treating every entry as an all-or-nothing decision.

The pressure was immense, and my results showed it.

Now, I use starter positions as reconnaissance.

They tell me if my read on the market is correct before I commit more capital - and starter positions can do the same for you…

Think of it like a scout team in sports - you send them in first to gather intelligence before committing your main forces.

The market is constantly giving us feedback.

Your job is to listen to that feedback and adjust accordingly.

Because trading isn't about being right or wrong, it's about managing uncertainty effectively.

And sometimes, the best way to manage uncertainty is to start small and scale intelligently.
